  • Location

    Gongju is a city located in the heart of the eastern part of Chungcheongnam-do Province.
    Sejong Special Self-Governing City and Daejeon are located to its east, Cheongyang and Yesan to its west, Buyeo and nonsan to its south, and Asan and Cheongan to its north.

  • Area

    Covering 864.29㎢ in area and thus accounting for 10.5% of the total area (8,213.36㎢) of Chungcheongnam-do Province, Gongju is the biggest region among the 15 cities and counties in the province. It makes up around 0.95% of the total area (99,407.9㎢) of South Korea, and the arable lands (rice paddies and fields) span around 185.82㎢, which is about 19.76% of the total area of the city. The ratio of arable land to total area is slightly lower than that of Korea, and the ratio of rice paddies to fields is 66:34, which is higher than that of the national average (61:39). On the other hand, ratio of forests to total area is around 5% higher than the national average.

  • Climate
    • In Gongju, the average temperature in spring is around 11.8°c, which is higher than that of nearby regions, except for metropolitan cities.
    • The springtime temperature of Gongju is about 0.5°c higher than that of the west coast and 0.6°c lower than that of Daejeon.
    • The average temperature in summer is around 24.7°c, which is higher than that of Buyeo (24.5°c) and about 0.1°c higher than that of Daejeon (24.6°c).
    • In Gongju, the average temperature in fall is approximately 14.0°c and is thus 0.7°c lower than that of Daejeon (14.7°c) and 0.2°c lower than that of Buyeo (14.2°c).
    • The average wintertime temperature in Chungcheongnam-do Province is around -1.5°c and 1.0°c, while it is about -0.9°c in Gongju.
  • Natural Environment
    • The main mountains in Gongju are Charyeongsan Mountain Range in the north and Gyeryongsan Mountain in the southeast. The Geumgang River flows through the city in the east to west direction, while tributaries of all sizes such as the Yugucheon, Jeongancheon, Daegyocheon, Jemincheon, and Hyeoljeocheon streams joint the river at various confluences.
    • There are one nationally managed river (Geumgang River) and one regionally managed river (Yugucheon Stream, Regional River Class I). The total length of all rivers and streams is 1,159km.
    • Gongju is generally much warmer than the areas located in its north, as Charyeongsan Mountain Range blocks the cold northerlies, but it exhibits characteristics of continental climate with a large temperature difference between the cold and hot seasons, due to the influence of the Geumgang River.
